Gone are the days of last-minute mega-deals, it really does pay to book ahead, especially if you're hoping to hit some of Europe's most famous Christmas markets.

It's hardly a secret that Germany steals the spotlight, drawing throngs of merry-makers from far and wide. The Detour Editor, Katy, knows Hamburg like the back of her hand.

And although it doesn't get as much footfall as the likes of Berlin, we trust her when she says they're just as good.

Heaps of markets pop up across the city, and you'll find everything from classic cookie-cutter chalets to something more, um, salacious! — can we call them XXXmas markets?
