The Alaskan panhandle might have a lot in common with the PNW coast, but everything is more extreme: bigger trees, bigger mountains, longer trails, more wildlife, and yes, harsher weather.... but not in summer!

You'll still get those misty, rainy days you're used to getting in Washington, but with lovely temps and a good chance at seeing some sunshine. The rain in Southeast Alaska makes everything feel so crisp and alive, but when those clouds part? It's one of the prettiest places on the planet!

Both of these spots are in the heart of the Tongass National Forest, the lush, mossy jungle that covers most of the panhandle. Pick a few of the many, many hikes in the area, and you can catch turquoise rivers, rocky cliffs, and even a dormant volcano.

That is, if you can tear yourself away from the water :-)
